A Note from Debbie Jones and "The Barn Story"

After graduating, many of the Class of 1958 disappeared from the area, but some of us stayed on. Except for graduate work at the University of Illinois and my first professional job at the University’s Krannert Art Museum, I continue to make the area my home. Following graduate work, I returned to convert the barn on the family property into a home and art studio. I’ve always appreciated the beauty of our Finger Lakes region and it inspires my woodcarving. Although my carvings are grounded in nature they’re altered to transcend the ordinary way we often look at the world around us. Along with woodcarving, I am working on an artist’s book, “The Barn Story,” a graphic novel about renovating the 19th century barn into a home and studio. The graphic memoir is divided into two parts. The first part explains the process of renovating the barn. In the absence of photographs of my original process, I illustrated the experience with drawings, watercolors, photographs and architectural renderings. I created a cartoon figure to represent me working on the major building steps of this seven-year project. The second part of the book contains photographs of the adapted barn interior with the cartoon figure leading the viewer through the finished residence. Pages from the book in progress are on display in my studio along with a number of wood carvings.

Bob Saturn Retires

Bob Saturn retired as Board Chair of the SouthEastern Bluegrass Association (SEBA) < http://www.sebabluegrass.org> on December 31, 2006. This completed his second two year stint in that capacity, his first being in 1998-1999 for this non-profit all volunteer association. He also retired from the board after serving almost since the beginning of the organization, now in its 23rd year. He learned to play the five string banjo bluegrass style in the early 1970’s a few years after a company transfer to Atlanta, Georgia. He enjoys a weekly “jam” session with friends playing and singing the good bluegrass and gospel music.

Cy Cantrell and his wife go Snowshoeing

Lynn and I went on a snowshoeing trip with a group from the Dallas Sierra Club last month. We backpacked several miles, stayed in a yurt (elevation 10,900), and made day trips to higher elevations. The picture shows us on a ridge, where the wind reduced the snow depth to a foot or so. In the woods, the snow was 3 or 4 feet deep. This was the first time we've been on snowshoes in almost 30 years. When we lived in Los Alamos, we made regular winter trips to the Santa Fe range, and when we lived in Swarthmore, we made a few trips every winter to the Adirondacks in New York State or the White Mountains in New Hampshire. The snowshoes we used then were heavy. In contrast, our new snowshoes weigh almost nothing--- in fact, almost compensating for 30 more years on our bodies.

Cindy (Beebee ) Anderson Passes Away

I had mentioned that Cindy (Beebee ) Anderson had moved from southern Virginia to Kansas to be near her son and also to receive treatment for breast cancer. I had not included that her cancer was late stage. Very soon after I had mailed the issue out, I received word from Shirley (Cook) Weeks, who is related to Cindy by marriage, that Cindy had passed away on the (Dec.) 15th. Joan Visits with Maj

July, 2006 found Joan (Warren) Edmondson, husband Dale, brother Chuck Warren  (IHS '62) and wife Joanna, on a quest to Russia to discover art painted by Joan's great grandfather in Russia from 1888 to 1921.    An 11 day river cruise from St. Petersburg to Moscow brought many thrills, surprises,  pleasures...but those are stories for another time....over vodka, blinis, sour cream and caviar ... in that order. (For a sampling of Great Grandfather’s art, see our website, www.grandart.org)   Since Joan and brother Chuck lived in Helsinki, Finland from 1945-1948, and youngest brother Jim (IHS '65) was born there, we decided to begin the July adventure with a short stay in Helsinki.  A long email to Maj (Tornroth) Simons, our classmate who still lives in Helsinki, and all was arranged.  We arrived in the middle of the greatest heat wave experienced all over Europe and Russia in decades. Maj met us at our hotel bar (one of few air conditioned places in town) and got us going on a glorious walking tour of this lovely sea port city.   Maj's English was impeccable, and our Finnish was non-existent, even though we were fluent as children.  A 3-hour boat tour around some of the thousands of islands off-shore from Helsinki was a highlight.  We saw private islands and homes (Maj's family owns one), embassy estates, clubs, elegant villas, wild life refuges,  and glorious birch trees everywhere.    After the obligatory shopping spree in a market square full of local craftspeople, we snacked on freshly made local specialties sold by street vendors.  Luckily we avoided our lunch getting snatched by clever seagulls, a common occurrence there.   Evening brought many special treats as we walked streets with Maj and her husband Tom, and dined at an exclusive seafood restaurant on a small island accessible only by boat.  Such fun we had reminiscing about Ithaca, IHS activities,  mutual friends and acquaintances, and catching up on years of challenges and accomplishments.  We were amazed to find that our professional lives had pursued a common path...writing and producing programs for educational radio and television!  The hours passed too quickly but we couldn't say good bye without seeing Maj and Tom's fabulous in-town condominium in a lovely part of town.  It was under complete renovation all planned and supervised by Maj.   Her charming artwork was stored safely, waiting to be displayed again in fresh surroundings.  We left with warm hearts and promises to plan for a longer visit together in the future. Attached are a few snapshots that survived a month long trip away from home.
